HACK A DAY’S entry into THE RED BULL development contest
We had tons of ideas, however the one that seemed a lot of feasible, as well as had the least probability of triggering mortal injury, was this. We produced a red bull introducing mortar system. The cans are introduced as well as a parachute deploys to bring them down to the excited people below safely. I was the one in fee of construction, so the rest of the team acted as consultants for this round. I was likewise able to recruit a few people from right here at Squidfoo for help.
Our very first task was producing the cannon itself. It is a relatively basic pneumatic cannon. There’s an empty propane storage tank for a compression chamber, then a solenoid valve going to the barrel. We selected to lay the propane storage tank on its side as well as set it on some wheels to enable for a best aiming mechanism. You can rotate the barrel up as well as down extremely easily. [Andrew Mitzel] put in a number of hours of difficult work getting that turning system to work just right.
After that, [Tony Sherwood] as well as I came up with a style that would function as a sabot in addition to a removable harness for the cans. The barrel is 3″ wide, so the cans needed some assist making a seal. [Tony] occurred to have a makerbot replicator with him, so we printed out completely sized bits, including our hackaday logo for the bottom. I added an LED in the hackaday logo just in situation you were to terminate these after dark. You can discover the data for our logo on thingiverse. You can discover the can top/bottom on [Tony’s] account (updated link coming as soon as he uploads them).
The only policy to this section of the contest was to use the bullduino they sent out. We utilized it as our security system. You have to push certain pads at the exact same time to arm the device. when armed, you can terminate only if you depress both the thumb button as well as the trigger. After about 15 seconds, they bullduino immediately disarms itself.
As you can see in the video, this sucker truly shoots the cans well. The parachutes deploy as well as the wind can bring the cans quite far. Of course, if the wind is blowing back at the cannon, they can drift all the method back too. We ended up choosing to terminate some rounds without parachutes just for fun. It quickly covered the distance of a football field.
We’re working on something totally un-safe with it, stay tuned.
Interestingly, the only issue I’ve run into in this entire process is the truth that the public domain music I selected has legal problems on youtube. obviously WMG has every performance of “Ride of the Valkyries” that is out there. Jerks.
Here’s a Vimeo link just incase the music ends up being an issue.
